Chhau Dance

Chhau dance is a well-known dance form of this region. Male dancers from local communities wear masks and perform at night in open spaces called ‘akhada’. It is accompanied by folk songs and instruments like drums, dhol, shehnai, dhamsa, and kharka. The performances depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and other local legends.

Bishnupur Mela

Held every year from 23rd to 27th December near the Madanmohan Temple, Bishnupur Mela is a famous celebration of local tradition. The fair showcases terracotta artefacts, handmade crafts, artworks, and traditional Bishnupuri clothing in its stalls. It also reflects the region’s rich musical heritage through cultural performances, featuring the renowned Bishnupur Gharana of singing.

Bishnupur Temple Town

Bishnupur is a historic town known for its terracotta temples, Baluchari sarees, and rich culture. It flourished under the Malla dynasty, leaving behind unique architecture and crafts. The temples feature carvings from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Key sites include the Shyam Ray Temple, Jorbangla, Rasmancha, and the historic cannon Dal Madol. The town is also known for its handloom, pottery, and traditional music and painting schools that are still preserved today.

Panchmura Village

Panchmura, a village near Bishnupur, is home to around 270 artisans who create terracotta items. It is especially known for its long-necked terracotta horses. Terracotta, meaning baked clay, is crafted and colored using clay itself, and then fired in kilns using dry eucalyptus leaves.

Bikna Village

Bikna, a village in Bankura district, is a major centre of Dokra art in India. Practised by the Dokra Damar community, it uses the traditional lost-wax metal casting technique with clay and wax. The craft produces items like jewellery, religious figures, cutlery, and bells, and remains an important cultural heritage of the Bishnupur region.

Gangani

Gangani, often called the 'Grand Canyon of Bengal', is a popular tourist and picnic spot near Garhbeta in Paschim Medinipur district. Located along the Shilabati River, it features striking natural canyon-like formations created by rain and erosion over time. The scenic landscape attracts visitors from across the state, and in winter, it also becomes a haven for migratory birds. Locally, it is known as 'Gangani Danga' or 'Gangani Khola'.

Kamarpukur - Jairambati

Situated en route to Joypur Forest, Kamarpukur and Jayrambati are 2 spiritually significant villages visited by thousands of devotees from around the world. Kamarpukur is the birthplace of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa and was once surrounded by vast green fields, giving it the appearance of an island. The village also reflects its past prosperity through old ponds, tanks, buildings, and temples linked to agriculture and cottage industries. Jayrambati, the birthplace of Sarada Devi, became more prominent after her advent and is closely associated with her life and teachings.

Mukutmanipur

Located at the confluence of the Kansabati and Kumari rivers, Mukutmanipur is home to tribal communities like the Santhal, Bhumij (Sardar), and Munda, known for their vibrant dance, crafts, music, and cuisine. The area also features the Kangsabati Dam, India’s second-largest earth dam, along with the water reservoir, forests, and hillocks. It is a popular destination that blends rich tribal culture with a peaceful natural landscape.
